The idler gear design has been upgraded to accept tapered roller bearings. This new design has some outstanding advantages, firstly the tapered bearings eliminate all gear end float, resulting in reduced transfer case gear slap and nil bore wear. Unlike the original needle roller bearings that brinell the running surface of the bore, if the tapered bearing outer surfaces wear they can be easily replaced whilst retaining the same gear.
A Note on Gear Noise: In some installations gear noise or singing will be evident when driving in high and low range. This is due to the gear form, pitch and pressure angle changing from standard to achieve the different ratios required for under / overdriving. There are more than 1000 installations around the world performing flawlessly but don’t expect factory quiet gears when changing your transfer case ratio’s.
This gear set is to suit 4 speed models 08/1980 to 10/1982 with a 34mm diameter idler shaft.
HIGH RANGE ratio 0.92:1 or 8 Percent Overdrive.
If your vehicle is fitted with a 4-speed gearbox behind an F, B or H series engine the overdrive will give you a reduction in engine revs of approximately 225rpm at 100km/h or 2575rpm instead of 2800rpm. Alternatively, if your vehicle is fitted with a 5-speed gearbox behind a 2F, B, 2H or 1HZ series engine. The overdrive will give you a reduction in engine revs of approximately 190rpm at 100km/h or 2175rpm instead of 2365rpm.
Alternatively, if your vehicle is fitted with a 5-speed gearbox behind a 3F, or HD series engine. The overdrive will give you a reduction in engine revs of approximately 200rpm at 100km/h or 2265rpm instead of 2465rpm.
The overdrive ratio is very useful in vehicles used for heavy towing as 4th gear can be utilised more often giving 5th gear an extended life.
The overdrive is also an advantage to vehicles fitted with turbo charged Toyota diesel engines, V8 diesel engines and V8 petrol engines giving extended fuel range and engine life.
Note: This overdrive has no extra moving parts and requires no extra maintenance.
LOW RANGE ratio 2.81:1 or 44% Reduction
Multiply this 2.81:1 by the 1st gear ratio of 4.843:1 and the differential ratio of 4.11:1 will give you a final drive ratio of 56:1 which is a vast improvement on the standard final drive ratio of 36.1:1.The extra low range transforms your Toyota into an unstoppable off road machine. The low range crawling speed is ideal for you crazy rock crawling maniacs.
Vehicles fitted with automatic transmissions, standard or other wise can also take advantage of the extra low gearing in low range as a dramatic improvement in engine braking is achieved giving much improved off road performance and increased safety.
