Chevy V8 Petrol Engines

TO

NISSAN GQ/GU 5-SPEED INFORMATION

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture conversion kits to replace the standard Nissan TB42, TB45 and TB48 petrol, TD42 and ZD30 diesel engines with GM petrol and diesel V8 engines.

We have found that the 5-speed transmission fitted to these vehicles is very durable and will handle the power of high output V8 engines.

NOTE: Vehicles fitted with the 2.8ltr engine is fitted with a smaller gearbox and is not considered strong enough to handle the power of V8 engines. If you are considering a V8 conversion for this vehicle you must change the transmission to one from a 4.2ltr or alternately you could fit a GM 3 or 4-speed automatic transmission to the original transfer case. Should you use an automatic transmission with your V8 conversion we would recommend you fit a set of extra low range gears to help regain your engine braking.

 
Engine Kit

The kit consists of an adaptor housing which couples the new engine to the original petrol or diesel bellhousing. The new adaptor housing measures 72 mm in length and spaces the new engine away from the irregular shape of the Nissan Patrol firewall.

No firewall modifications or re positioning of the original transmission is required.

An input shaft extension is also supplied with the kit, which fits over the original gearbox input shaft. The new spigot bearing supports the input shaft extension at the front and the gearbox input bearing at the rear so no movement is experienced. The input shaft extension converts the Nissan gearbox splines to standard GM 10T dimensions.

If you are fitting a high performance engine or a Big Block 454 or larger we recommend using our kit which utilises the 12" 26t spline heavy duty clutch.

A GM flywheel and clutch is used for the conversion.

A flywheel cover plate, thrust bearing extension carrier, spigot bush as well as all the required bolts are supplied with the kit.

Clutch Hydraulics

The standard Nissan clutch hydraulics don't have enough travel to fully disengage the Chevy 11" or 12" clutch. Marks 4WD Adaptors now have kit that includes a new clutch master cylinder and a new slave cylinder that when fitted will give sufficient travel to fully disengage the 11" or 12" Chevy clutch.

Chevy Starter Clearance

A Hi Torque starter motor is required when fitting Chevy engines, the standard direct drive type is quite large and can be damaged  by the front drive shaft under full suspension compression. We recommend using after market types which allow you to rotate the solenoid to a position above the centre line of the starter or alternately a genuine Chevy type can be used. A McLeod Hi-Torque starter was used on our vehicle and proved to be successful.

Chevy V8 Petrol Engines

When ordering kits to suit the small block Chevy V8 petrol engines it is important that you tell us the flywheel size you intend using with the Chevy engine in order to receive the correct kit.  The 11" has a 153 tooth ring gear and the 12" has a 168 tooth ring gear.

Engine Mountings

Engine mounting kits are also available to fit the GM V8 engines. These kits consist of engine mounting rubbers, bolts, and new chassis brackets. The old chassis brackets will need to be cut off the chassis and the new ones welded back on.

The engine mountings have been designed to give you sufficient legal sump to differential clearance when using a rear bowel GM sump.

NOTE: The engine mounting kits will only suit the coil sprung front-end vehicles. Early cab chassis GQ and Ford Maverick vehicles were fitted with leaf springs.

Engine Mounting Rubbers

Two types of engine mounting rubbers are available, standard Chevy type and now a heavy duty rebuildable type using urethane bushes. Click here for details.

New Chevy Bolt In Engine Mountings

We now manufacture engine mounting brackets that bolt directly from the engine block to the original Nissan engine mounting rubbers. Note: These engine mountings can only be used with our MFH8027 headers.

Front Springs

Heavy-duty front springs are recommended with a 25mm bump stop extension to give adequate front drive shaft to adaptor housing clearance.

Nissan Fan to GM Water Pump Adaptor

The Nissan viscous coupled fan is very effective as the coupling, when heated by the warm air from the radiator, virtually locks the fan directly to the water pump rapidly cooling the engine. Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture an adaptor kit that easily couples the the Chevy and Holden V8 water pump and pulley to the Nissan viscous coupling and fan. When cooling high performance engines we have found that fitting a Toyota viscous coupling and fan proved to be superior compared to the Nissan type. Marks 4WD Adaptors now have a kit for the Toyota type that includes the fan, viscous coupling and the adaptor.
