HZJ80 Chev V8 Diesel

CHEVY V8 DIESEL ENGINES

To

LAND CRUISER HZJ80

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture kits that allow the fitting of 380 C.I. (6.2 LTR) and 400 C.I. (6.5 LTR).

In Australia an engineer's report is required after the conversion has been completed. Contact your local RTA office for a list of engineers.

80 Series Land Cruiser Information:

HZJ80 manufactured from May 1990 to 1998 powered by the 6-cylinder 4.2ltr diesel engine. The transmission a 5-speed manual. The 4-speed automatic, with a lockup torque converter was not an option with this engine. The transfer case type HF2A (full time FWD) or HF1A (part time 4WD).

100 Series Land Cruiser Information:

NOTE: late model 100 series vehicles fitted with naturally aspirated 1HZ diesels are fitted with a R151 gearbox, this gearbox we consider to be marginal in strength. If you are considering a V8 conversion it should be replaced with a gearbox from a 4.5 petrol or a turbo diesel model.

Chevy V8 Diesel to the Land Cruiser 5-Speed Manual

The HZJ80/100 Manual - GM V8 Kit part no. MFK1060CD utilises the Toyota bellhousing, instead of a replacement bellhousing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 61 mm/2.4" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota 1HZ, bolt pattern on the rear.

The new flywheel supplied in the kit accepts the original Toyota 11" clutch. The flywheel is offset to the rear to place the clutch in its original position. The flywheel has no ring gear and must be used with the original GM flex plate and ring gear. Spacers and bolts are supplied to fix the flex plate to the back of the flywheel.

Engine Mounting

The MFK680/CK engine mounting kit to suit the 80 series Land Cruiser consists of replacement chassis brackets, engine mounting rubbers and bolts. The original Toyota chassis brackets are welded to the chassis and must be cut off with a grinder to make room for the new brackets. The new brackets must also be welded to the chassis, if you're not a good or qualified welder, we suggest a contract welder do the job. When using this kit firewall modification is required.

Alternatively we now manufacture engine mounting brackets that bolt directly to the Chevy engine block and onto the original Toyota engine mounting rubbers.

Drive Shaft Spacer

To prevent the need to modify the firewall behind the right hand cylinder head we suggest slotting the cross member mounting holes to bring the engine forward approximately 20mm. After this is done the rear drive shaft will need to be lengthened or alternately a spacer can be fitted between the transfer case output flange and the drive shaft. Marks 4WD Adaptors now manufacture a 20mm long spacer, see part number below.

Accessories

When fitting the 6.2 or 6.5 ltr diesel with this conversion kit the GM engine accessories may be used, for example the A/C compressor, power steering pump and alternator. Note: The original GM water pump with a single serpentine belt is a reverse direction pump. Alternatively the Toyota accessories could be adapted to fit the new engine.

Air Cleaner Adaptor

Chevy diesel engines are usually fitted with an air cleaner that looks similar to the type fitted to Chevy petrol carburettor engines. This type of air cleaner will require modifications to allow it to be used with a snorkel. To over come this problem Marks 4WD Adaptors now manufacture a cast aluminium hat that takes the place of the GM air cleaner. The inlet takes a 3 1/2" hose and will fit directly to a late model Toyota air cleaner hose, should you have an early model air cleaner with a 3" outlet a rubber adaptor hose can be used. These parts can be purchased separately or as a complete kit.

Chevy V8 Diesel to the Land Cruiser 4-speed Automatic

The HZJ80/100 Manual - GM V8 Kit part no. MFK1060CDA utilises the Toyota bellhousing, instead of a replacement bellhousing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 61 mm/2.4" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota 1HZ, bolt pattern on the rear.

The transmission torque converter is coupled to the flywheel via a crankshaft adaptor. The adaptor has a special bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the transmission end with the GM crankshaft bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the engine end.

This allows the new flex plate (supplied in the kit) and the Toyota torque converter to be bolted to the rear as with the old 1HZ engine. On the front of the crankshaft adaptor a flywheel is used instead of a flex plate, as there is no provision to support a flex plate when the starter motor is engaged.
