BJ40 Holden V8

LAND CRUISER BJ40 and BJ42

Holden V8 to the Land Cruiser 4 and 5-Speed

Bellhousing

When fitting the GM V8 to a BJ Land Cruiser either a gearbox swap or a gearbox modification/rebuild is required. The input shaft in the BJ gearbox has a 21 tooth clutch spline and must be changed to a 10 tooth type as found in the petrol FJ## models.

Changing the input shaft allows the use of our kit part no. (MFK371#####). The new flywheel is drilled and doweled to accept the Land Cruiser 11" clutch along with the new bellhousing that measures 240mm/9.45" in length. The new bellhousing and flywheel combination have been designed to move the engine forward giving adequate clearance between the cylinder heads and firewall. Re positioning of the transmission or firewall modifications are not required with this kit.

The new steel flywheel is the same design as the one used with the LS series engine kits. It is supplied with a flex plate stiffener which bolts up to the original GM flex plate, the stiffener is basically a very thin flywheel. A crankshaft adaptor/spacer is bolted to the crankshaft which also secures the flex plate/ring gear and flex plate stiffener to the crankshaft.  The original GM flex plate with the 153-tooth ring gear is used. The new steel flywheel is drilled and doweled to accept the standard Land Cruiser 11" clutch as fitted to FJ## series engines. The flywheel assembly is heavier than a standard flywheel, giving greater inertia allowing the engine to idle smoother. The extra weight also helps to give less chance of stalling the engine when off road, climbing over rocks, and taking off on steep inclines. The extra weight of the flywheel has no adverse effect on the engine.

The bellhousing accepts all the Land Cruiser 2F 6-cylinder petrol components such as the bellhousing mounts, slave cylinder, clutch fork etc.

This means, some additional "2F" petrol parts will be required. Left and right bellhousing mounts and bolts, clutch slave cylinder, push rod and bolts, thrust bearing carrier, clutch fork, clutch fork pivot, clutch fork boot, bellhousing breather boot, gearbox front cover plate.

When ordering Holden 308 V8 kits, please advise whether the bolt pattern at the rear of the engine is Trimatic or Turbo (Chevy) pattern.

Oil Filter Clearance

Holden V8 engines when fitted to BJ40 and BJ42 series Land Cruisers will require the oil filter to be shifted as it is only a few mm from the L/H chassis rail. Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture an oil filter adaptor housing that rotates the oil filter and housing away from the chassis rail.

Engine Mountings

Engine mounting kits are available. These kits consist of replacement chassis brackets which can be bolted or welded to the chassis rails and utilise GM engine mounting rubbers. The engine mounting kits have been designed to give you sufficient legal engine sump to differential clearance when used with a standard rear bowel GM sump.

Interface Wiring

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture an interface-wiring loom for Holden EFI V8 engines to fit any model Land Cruiser. The loom comes with the GM plugs, all relays, and fuses mounted in waterproof holders, and instructions.

Speed Sensor

Marks 4WD Adaptors also manufacture an inline speed sensor. The speed sensor is screwed into the transfer case in place of the speedometer cable, which screws into the back of the new sensor. The signal from the sensor is sent to an interface box, which then processes the signal prior to sending it on to the ECM. The speed sensor comes with the sender, an interface box, with an interconnecting loom, which has a waterproof plug located near the sender. A small loom is also provided to allow the interface box to be connected to the ECM, ignition B+ and earth.

BCM

Commodore VR and VS engine computers (PCM's) require a security signal from the body control module before the engine can be started. The BCM simulator is programmed to supply the correct security signal allowing the engine to be started.

The simulator is programmed to send both VR and VS security codes.

The simulator is also equipped with an output to control a relay for the engine cooling fan. This option will only work with VS models.

PCM Mem-Cals

Commodore VT engine management computers require a stream of data to be sent to them from the body control module, prior to starting the engine. This is part of the vehicles anti theft system. The stream of data required by the PCM is special. Fortunately the input to the PCM can be switched off by changing the program information in the mem-cal. Marks 4WD Adaptors can supply mem-cals on an exchange or out right basis.

EFI Component Brackets

Marks 4WD Adaptors also manufacture a range of brackets to make the EFI parts easy to install. E.g. the high pressure fuel pump and damper bracket kit, relay mounting, high pressure fuel filter bracket, carbon canister bracket, map sensor bracket and mounting bolts, nuts and clamps.

EFI High Pressure Fuel Pump

The 40 series vehicles fitted with diesel engines will require a high pressure fuel pump and filter system when fitting the EFI Holden V8 engine. Marks 4WD Adaptors now have a kit that includes a high pressure, fuel pump, and filter along with all of the EFI component-mounting brackets required to do the job.

Holden 308 V8 Bolt Patterns

Holden V8 engines are available with two bellhousing bolt patterns all 253 C.I. engines have the Holden Trimatic bolt pattern.

The 308 C.I. engines are available with the Turbo or Trimatic bolt patterns.

The 1988 VN and later 304 C.I. and 350 C.I. engines have the Turbo bolt pattern.

The bolt patterns are illustrated below.

Chevy Turbo bolt pattern. Holden Trimatic bolt pattern.
