FJ70 Chev V8

LAND CRUISER FJ70, FJ73 AND FJ75

CHEVY PETROL V8 ENGINES TO THE LAND CRUISER 5-SPEED MANUAL

To comply with Australian emission laws the new engine must have been manufactured the same year or later than the vehicle. The engine must also have all of the emission components connected, including the catalytic converter. In this instance the engine must also be run on unleaded fuel or LPG. An older engine can be fitted providing it's run only on LPG fuel.

In Australia an engineer's report is required after the conversion has been completed. Contact your local RTA office for a list of engineers.

The MFK371 Bellhousing Kit

The GM V8 to FJ kit part no. (MFK371#####) utilises the Land Cruiser 11" clutch set up on a new flywheel along with a new bellhousing that measures 240mm/9.45" in length. This new bellhousing and flywheel has been designed to move the engine forward giving adequate clearance between the cylinder heads and firewall. Re positioning of the transmission or firewall modifications are not required with this kit.

Internally balanced GM engines used with the following kits: MFK371C, and MFK371C/5

The new flywheel supplied in the kit is fully balanced and fitted with a new GM 153-tooth ring gear, it is drilled and doweled to accept the standard Land Cruiser 11" clutch as fitted to the 2F, 3F, and 2H engines. The flywheel is heavier, giving greater inertia allowing the engine to idle smoother. The extra weight also helps to give less chance of stalling the engine when off road climbing over rocks, and taking off on steep inclines. The extra weight of the flywheel has no adverse effect on the engine.

As the flywheel supplied with the kit has a 153-tooth ring gear you must use the correct Chevy starter motor to suit. This starter motor can be identified as having an alloy nose cone and uses a short and long bolt to attach the starter to the engine block.

Externally balanced GM engines used with the following kits: MFK371CE5 and MFK371C/L5.

The new flywheel supplied in the kit is fully balanced, and is drilled and doweled to accept the standard Land Cruiser 11" clutch as fitted to the 2F, 3F, and 2H engines. The flywheel is heavier, giving greater inertia allowing the engine to idle smoother. The extra weight also helps to give less chance of stalling the engine when off road climbing over rocks, and taking off on steep inclines. The extra weight of the flywheel has no adverse effect on the engine.

This new flywheel does not have a ring gear fitted, it bolts to the crankshaft behind the GM flex plate. The flex plate carries the ring gear and the balance weight for the engine. The flex plate ring gear must have 168 teeth. The flex plate is secured to the back of the flywheel with 6 bolts and spacers.

The bellhousing accepts all the Land Cruiser 6-cylinder petrol components such as the bellhousing mounts, slave cylinder, clutch fork etc.

It will also be necessary to identify the year of your Chevy engine, particularly the late model engines as the crankshaft bolt pattern changed in 1986. The post 1986 Chevy small block engines were also externally balanced. One way to identify a late model Chevy engine is by the one piece, external rear main oil seal.

The MFK560 Engine Kit

Chevy V8 to FJ7# 5-Speed Manual Kit part no. (MFK560#####) utilises the GM flywheel and clutch along with the Toyota bellhousing. Instead of a new bellhousing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 122 mm/4.8" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota 1F, 2F, and 3F, bolt pattern on the rear.

The kit has been designed to allow for firewall clearance without shifting the transmission or altering the drive shaft lengths.

The gear box input shaft is coupled to the clutch via an input extension shaft. The shaft has the Toyota internal spline and spigot diameter on the gearbox end with the GM external spline and spigot diameter on the engine end. The front of the shaft is supported in the crankshaft by a sealed ball bearing inside an adaptor ring.

The clutch is operated through a thrust bearing extension sleeve, which is supported in a machined boss located in the centre of the housing. On the front of the sleeve is a bearing to suit the GM clutch pressure plate.

Engine Mounting

The engine mounting kit to suit the 70 series Land Cruiser consists of replacement chassis brackets, engine mounting rubbers and bolts. The original Toyota chassis brackets are welded to the chassis and must be removed to make room for the new brackets. The new brackets must be bolted or welded to the chassis, if you're not a good or qualified welder we suggest a contract welder do the job.

The new chassis mounts have been designed to give you sufficient legal sump clearance between the differential and the bottom of the engine when used with a standard rear bowel GM sump.

Engine Mounting Rubbers

Two types of engine mounting rubbers are available, standard Chevy type and now a heavy duty rebuildable type using urethane bushes. Click here for details.

Accessory Mount And Drive Kit

The mount and drives kit have been designed to allow you to reuse the original 3F Land Cruiser power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, alternator, and viscous coupled fan with the small block Chevy engine. All of these components have been fitted in their original positions; the power steering pump on the right hand side uses its original hoses and pulley.

The air conditioning compressor does not require re-plumbing or de-gassing, simply unbolt it from the old engine, and bolt it back onto the new brackets. Note: The Chevy engine driven fuel pump can not be used as the A/C compressor mounting bracket utilises the fuel pump mounting position on the engine block. The alternator is also removed from the old engine and bolted to the left side of the Chevy engine allowing the wiring to plug in without alteration.

The kit comes complete with a new water pump, gaskets, power steering pump brackets, air conditioner compressor brackets, alternator brackets, aluminium crankshaft pulley, fan pulley adaptor, top and bottom radiator hoses, fan belt, A/C drive belt, power steering drive belt, all bolts, washers, nuts, clamps and instructions. NOTE: This kit should only be used with the MFK371 engine kits, the reason for this is the MFK371 kit is approximately 2" shorter than the MFK560 kit, the shorter kit allows plenty of room for the Chevy long water pump and the Toyota Viscous coupling and fan.

Tachometer Interface

Marks 4WD Adaptors now manufacture a new interface designed to calibrate your existing Toyota 6-cylinder petrol tachometer so that it can be driven from your V8 Chevy or V8 Holden engine. This eliminates the inconvenience of removing your tachometer from your dashboard to have it re-calibrated. The unit is easy to install and only requires a connection to the ignition coil, tachometer wire, earth B- and ignition B+.
