LAND CRUISER FJ80

80 Series Land Cruiser Information:

FJ80 manufactured from January 1990 to August 1992 powered by the 6-cylinder 4 litre 3F or 3F-E, petrol engine. The transmission a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic, with a lockup torque converter. The transfer case type HF2A (full time FWD) or HF1A (part time 4WD).

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture kits that allow the fitting of 305 C.I., 350 C.I. early, late and LT1, and 454 C.I. engines.

Australian Emission Requirements

To comply with Australian emission laws the new engine must have been manufactured the same year or later than the vehicle. The engine must also have all of the emission components connected, including the catalytic converter. In this instance the engine must also be run on unleaded fuel or LPG. An older engine can be fitted providing it's run only on LPG fuel.

In Australia an engineer's report is required after the conversion has been completed. Contact your local RTA office for a list of engineers.

Chevy V8 to the Land Cruiser 5-Speed Manual

Two types of Chevy engine kits are available for the FJ80 Land Cruiser, in short the MFK560#### kit utilises the Chevy clutch and shifts the engine bellhousing face 122mm/4.8" forward. The MFK1260### kit utilises the original Land Cruiser clutch and shifts the engine bellhousing face 74mm/2.9" forward, this kit allows more room at the front to fit the accessories whether they be Chevy or Toyota. Please NOTE: When using the MFK1260 kit firewall modifications will be required.

560 Engine Kit

Chevy V8 to FJ80 5-Speed Manual Kit part no. (MFK560#####) utilises the GM flywheel and clutch along with the Toyota bellhousing and sandwich plate. Instead of a new bellhousing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 122 mm/4.8" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota 3F, bolt pattern on the rear.

The kit has been designed to allow for firewall clearance without shifting the transmission or altering the drive shaft lengths.

The gear box input shaft is coupled to the clutch via an input extension shaft. The shaft has the Toyota internal spline and spigot diameter on the gearbox end with the GM external spline and spigot diameter on the engine end. The front of the shaft is supported in the crankshaft by a sealed ball bearing inside an adaptor ring.

The clutch is operated through a thrust bearing extension sleeve, which is supported in a machined boss located in the centre of the housing. On the front of the sleeve is a bearing to suit the GM clutch pressure plate.

When fitting a Chevy engine you must make sure that the GM starter motor you intend using is the correct type. Chevy V8 engines were released with two flywheel and flex plate sizes; they where 153 tooth ring gear or 168 tooth ring gear, as a result two starter motor offsets are available.

It will also be necessary to identify the year of the engine, after 1986 the engine crankshaft bolt pattern changed. The bolt pattern is smaller as is the spigot, which locates the flywheel on the crankshaft (52.4-mm). The post 1986 Chevy small block engines are also externally balanced. One way to identify a late model Chevy engine is by the one-piece external, rear main oil seal.

Clutch

Marks 4WD Adaptors stock and recommend using the 11" Chevy clutch with this conversion, the clutch pressure plate should be a low finger type. The clutch slave cylinder will need to be re-sleeved to 11/16" bore size. This modification will allow the clutch to operate correctly. The sleeve kit includes a new sleeve, piston, push rod and rubbers.

MFK1260 Engine Kit

The FJ80 Manual - GM V8 Kit part no. MFK1260##### utilises the Toyota bellhousing, instead of a replacement bellhousing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 74 mm/2.9" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota FJ, bellhousing bolt pattern on the rear. NOTE: This kit does not use the original Toyota sandwich plate.

The new flywheel supplied in the kit accepts the original Toyota 11" clutch. The flywheel is offset to the rear to place the clutch in its original position. The flywheel has no ring gear and must be used with the original GM flex plate and ring gear with 168 teeth. Spacers and bolts are supplied to fix the flex plate to the back of the flywheel.

Engine Mounting

The engine mounting kit to suit the FJ80 series Land cruiser consists of replacement chassis brackets, engine mounting rubbers and bolts. The original Toyota chassis brackets are welded to the chassis and must be cut off with a grinder to make room for the new brackets. The new brackets must also be welded to the chassis, if you're not a good or qualified welder we suggest a contract welder do the job.

Engine Mounting Rubbers

Two types of engine mounting rubbers are available, standard Chevy type and now a heavy duty rebuildable type using urethane bushes. Click here for details.

Tachometer Interface

Marks 4WD Adaptors now manufacture a new interface designed to calibrate your existing Toyota 6-cylinder petrol tachometer so that it can be driven from your V8 Chevy or V8 Holden engine. This eliminates the inconvenience of removing your tachometer from your dashboard to have it re-calibrated. The unit is easy to install and only requires a connection to the ignition coil, tachometer wire, earth B- and ignition B+.

Accessory Mount and Drive Kit

The mount and drive kit is designed to allow you to reuse the original 3F or 3FE Land Cruiser power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, alternator, and viscous coupled fan with the small block Chevy engine. All of these components have been fitted in their original positions; the power steering pump on the right hand side uses its original hoses and pulley.

The air conditioning compressor does not require re-plumbing or de-gassing, simply unbolt it from the old engine, and bolt it back onto the new brackets. Note: The Chevy engine driven fuel pump can not be used as the A/C compressor mounting bracket utilises the fuel pump mounting position on the engine block. The alternator is also removed from the old engine and bolted to the left side of the Chevy engine allowing the wiring to plug in without alteration.

The kit comes complete with a new water pump, gaskets, power steering pump brackets, air conditioner compressor brackets, alternator brackets, aluminium crankshaft pulley, fan pulley adaptor, top and bottom radiator hoses, fan belt, A/C drive belt, power steering drive belt, all bolts, washers, nuts, clamps and instructions. NOTE: This kit should only be used with the MFK1260 engine kits, the reason for this is the MFK1260 kit is approximately 2" shorter than the MFK560 kit, the shorter kit allows plenty of room for the Chevy long water pump and the Toyota Viscous coupling and fan.

MFK560 Engine Kits

Chevy V8 to the Land Cruiser 4-speed Automatic

Two types of Chevy engine kits are available for the FJ80 Land Cruiser automatic, in short the MFK560#### kit shifts the engine bellhousing face 122mm/4.8" forward. 560 Engine Kit

The FJ80 Automatic - GM V8 Kit part no. (MFK560####A) utilises the Toyota bellhousing and sandwich plate. Instead of a replacement bellhousing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 122 mm/4.8" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota F series, bolt pattern on the rear.

The transmission torque converter is coupled to the flywheel via a crankshaft adaptor. The adaptor has the Toyota crankshaft bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the transmission end with the GM crankshaft bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the engine end.

This allows the Toyota flex plate and torque converter to be bolted to the rear as with the old F engine. On the rear of the engine a flywheel is used instead of a flex plate, as there is no provision to support a flex plate when the starter motor is engaged.

When fitting a Chevy engine you must make sure that the GM starter motor you intend using is the correct type. Chevy V8 engines were released with two flywheel and flex plate sizes; they where 153 tooth ring gear or 168 tooth ring gear, as a result two starter motor offsets are available.

This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota FJ, bellhousing bolt pattern on the rear. NOTE: This kit does not use the original Toyota sandwich plate.

The transmission torque converter is coupled to the flywheel via a crankshaft adaptor. The adaptor has a special bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the transmission end with the GM crankshaft bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the engine end.

This allows the new flex plate (supplied in the kit) and the Toyota torque converter to be bolted to the rear as with the old 3F engine. On the rear of the engine the GM flywheel is used instead of a flex plate, as there is no provision to support a flex plate when the starter motor is engaged.
