HJ45/47 Holden V8

LAND CRUISER HJ45 and HJ47

Holden V8 to the Land Cruiser 4 and 5-Speed

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture kits that allow the fitting of 253, 304, 308 and 350 Cubic Inch Holden V8 engines.

To comply with Australian emission laws the new engine must have been manufactured the same year or later than the vehicle. The engine must also have all of the emission components connected, including the catalytic converter. In this instance the engine must also be run on unleaded fuel or LPG.

In Australia an engineer's report is required after the conversion has been completed. Contact your local RTA office for a list of engineers.

We recommend fitting front disc brakes to all vehicles being fitted with V8 engines. Most engineers in Australia will not engineer your vehicle without them. Toyota Hilux front discs, hubs and swivel housings can be fitted.

Bellhousing

The GM V8 to HJ kit part no. (MFK371#####) utilises the Land Cruiser 11" clutch set up on a new flywheel along with a new bellhousing that measures 240mm/9.45" in length. This new bellhousing and flywheel has been designed to move the engine forward. Re positioning of the transmission is not required with this kit. However, the firewall behind the L/H cylinder head will need slight modification.

The new flywheel is fully balanced and fitted with a new GM 153 tooth ring gear, it is drilled and doweled to accept the standard Land Cruiser 11" clutch as fitted 2H diesel engines. The flywheel is heavier, giving greater inertia allowing the engine to idle smoother. The extra weight also helps to give less chance of stalling the engine when off road climbing over rocks, and taking off on steep inclines. The extra weight of the flywheel has no adverse effect on the engine.

The bellhousing accepts all Land Cruiser 2F or 2H 6-cylinder components such as the bellhousing mounts, slave cylinder, clutch fork etc.

If your vehicle is fitted with a H diesel some additional 2F or 2H parts will be required. Left and right bellhousing mounts and bolts, right hand chassis mount, clutch slave cylinder, push rod and bolts, thrust bearing carrier, clutch fork, clutch fork pivot, clutch fork boot, bellhousing breather boot, and 2F or 2H clutch kit.

When ordering Holden 308 V8 kits, please advise whether the bolt pattern at the rear of the engine is Trimatic or Turbo (Chevy) pattern.

Oil Filter Clearance

Holden V8 engines when fitted to HJ45 and HJ47 series Land Cruisers will require the oil filter to be shifted, as it is only a few mm from the L/H chassis rail. Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture an oil filter adaptor housing that rotates the oil filter and housing away from the chassis rail.

Engine Mountings

Engine mounting kits are available. These kits consist of replacement chassis brackets which can be bolted or welded to the chassis rails and utilise GM engine mounting rubbers.

The engine mounting kits have been designed to give you sufficient legal engine sump to differential clearance when used with a standard rear bowel GM sump.

Interface Wiring

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture an interface-wiring loom for Holden EFI V8 engines to fit any model Land Cruiser. The loom comes with the GM plugs, all relays, and fuses mounted in waterproof holders, and instructions.

Speed Sensor

Marks 4WD Adaptors also manufacture an inline speed sensor. The speed sensor is screwed into the transfer case in place of the speedometer cable, which screws into the back of the new sensor. The signal from the sensor is sent to an interface box, which then processes the signal prior to sending it on to the ECM. The speed sensor comes with the sender, an interface box, with an interconnecting loom, which has a waterproof plug located near the sender. A small loom is also provided to allow the interface box to be connected to the ECM, ignition B+ and earth.

BCM

Commodore VR and VS engine computers (PCM's) require a security signal from the body control module before the engine can be started. The BCM simulator is programmed to supply the correct security signal allowing the engine to be started.

The simulator is programmed to send both VR and VS security codes.

The simulator is also equipped with an output to control a relay for the engine cooling fan. This option will only work with VS models.

PCM Mem-Cals

Commodore VT engine management computers require a stream of data to be sent to them from the body control module, prior to starting the engine. This is part of the vehicles anti theft system. The stream of data required by the PCM is special. Fortunately the input to the PCM can be switched off by changing the program information in the mem-cal. Marks 4WD Adaptors can supply mem-cals on an exchange or out right basis.

EFI Component Brackets

Marks 4WD Adaptors also manufacture a range of brackets to make the EFI parts easy to install. E.g. the high pressure fuel pump and damper bracket kit, relay mounting, high pressure fuel filter bracket, carbon canister bracket, map sensor bracket and mounting bolts, nuts and clamps.

EFI High Pressure Fuel Pump

The 40 series vehicles fitted with diesel engines will require a high pressure fuel pump and filter system when fitting the EFI Holden V8 engine. Marks 4WD Adaptors now have a kit that includes a high pressure, fuel pump, and filter along with all of the EFI component-mounting brackets required to do the job.

Holden 308 V8 Bolt Patterns

Holden V8 engines are available with two bellhousing bolt patterns all 253 C.I. engines have the Holden Trimatic bolt pattern.

The 308 C.I. engines are available with the Turbo or Trimatic bolt patterns.

The 1988 VN and later 304 C.I. and 350 C.I. engines have the Turbo bolt pattern.

The bolt patterns are illustrated below.

Chevy Turbo bolt pattern. Holden Trimatic bolt pattern.
