Australian Emission Requirements

To comply with Australian emission laws the new engine must have been manufactured the same year or later than your vehicle. The engine must also have all of the emission components connected, including the catalytic converter. In this instance the engine must also be run on unleaded fuel or LPG.

In Australia an engineer's report is required after the conversion has been completed. Contact your local RTA office for a list of engineers.

Chevy Gen3, Gen4 V8 to the Land Cruiser 5-Speed Manual

The HZJ80/100 or HDJ80/100 Manual - GM V8 Kit part no. MFK1060G3 or MFK1060G3T utilises the Toyota bell housing, instead of a replacement bell housing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 61 mm/2.4" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota 1HZ/HDJ, bolt pattern on the rear.

The new flywheel supplied in the MFK1060G3 kit is drilled to accept the original Toyota 11" clutch and the MFK1060G3T uses the 12" clutch. The flywheel assembly is offset to the rear to place the clutch in its original position. The flywheel has no ring gear and consists of the original GM automatic flex plate/ring gear, with a flex plate stiffener, bolted to the back of it, a crankshaft adaptor/spacer is then used to attach the steel flywheel. A flywheel cover plate is supplied in the kit, the cover fully seals the bell housing to the back of the engine.

The kit is also supplied with an oil pressure sensor adaptor, the adaptor is fitted in place of the of the GM sender located behind the intake manifold at the back of the engine block.

A water temperature adaptor is also supplied, the adaptor is fitted in the right hand cylinder head behind the exhaust manifold, it accepts the original Toyota sender.

Engine Mounting, A/C Compressor, Alternator Relocation

The engine mounting kit to suit the FZJ80 series Land Cruiser consists of engine block brackets which bolt to the original Toyota engine mount rubbers. The  transmission is moved forward 25mm to help reduce the amount of modifying required to gain enough clearance between the right hand rear coil pack and the firewall.

The right hand chassis bracket must be reduced in length to allow the A/C compressor to fit as shown in this photo. The engine mountings are designed to offset the engine toward the left hand side of the vehicle to allow enough room to fit the A/C compressor. The kit includes a new A/C compressor bracket which has been re-machined to give an additional 10mm of chassis clearance.

The LS2 air compressor is smaller than the LS1 version but the mounting bracket offsets the compressor to far out from the engine block which prevents it from fitting into the Toyota chassis.

The alternator is then relocated to the top of the engine on the left hand side as their isn't enough room for it to fit in its original position between the block and the chassis. A new re-machined alternator bracket is supplied with the kit along with a new interface bracket and bolts. This is a photo of a relocated alternator on a super charged engine. Note the installation in this photo is in progress and the alternator has been temporarily fitted.

The alternator and A/C relocation brackets supplied in the kit will only fit the long style water pump as found on the LS1 and LS2 Commodore engines up to the VZ model. The VE models and truck versions of the LS1 and LS2 have different water pump offsets. To use this kit on the truck or short water pump version new LS1/LS2 long pump accessories including the harmonic balancer will need to be purchased.

Engine Sump

The aluminium truck style rear drop sump is the preferred type for off road vehicles. The sump will require some modification to enable it to clear the steering track rod when the suspension is fully compressed. The pickup will also need to be modified to suit the sump. Marks 4WD Adaptors now stock modified truck style sumps with pickups. The Commodore dipstick and dipstick tube can be used with the truck sump but will require modification.

Interface Wiring Looms and Engine Management Systems

Marks 4WD Adaptors now manufacture a complete engine wiring harness for the Gen3 engine, this harness comes complete with all relays. The loom is also fitted with the standard OBD2 diagnostic plug to make fault finding a breeze. The loom can be used on vehicles fitted with a manual transmission or the original Toyota Automatic transmission. The loom is also equipped with a 9-pin plug to enable easy connection to the VSS interface.

Marks 4WD Adaptors also manufacture an interface loom for the three plug VT engine loom. This interface loom is equipped with all of the required relays and fuses to control the PCM, fuel pump, A/C compressor, Engine fans and reverse lights. The interface loom can be used with either the manual or automatic VT engine looms.

Complete engine management systems are also available for the Gen4 engines. They include the engine harness, ECU, MAF sensor, O2 sensors, and drive by wire pedal assembly.

Gen3 and Gen4 V8 Engine to 5-Speed Manual Kits

Chevy V8 to the Land Cruiser 4-speed Automatic

It is recommended that the electronic aspect of this conversion be undertaken by a competent auto electrician. Marks 4WD Adaptors have successfully designed & tested a proto type computer interface to enable the shifting of the standard automatic for the pre 1995 80 Series & 100 series 4 speed auto models. This interface works in conjunction with modifying the orginal Toyota harness. The production harness & interface are currently not available. Alternatively the vehicle can be shipped to Marks 4WD Adaptors for harness/interface modification.

The HDJ80/100 Manual - GM V8 Kit part no. MFK1060G3A utilises the Toyota bell housing, instead of a replacement bell housing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 61 mm/2.4" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota HDJ, bolt pattern on the rear.

The transmission torque converter is coupled to the flywheel via a crankshaft adaptor. The adaptor has the Toyota bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the transmission end with the GM crankshaft bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the engine end.

This allows the Toyota flex plate and torque converter to be bolted to the rear as with the old HDJ engine. On the rear of the engine the GM flex plate is utilised, it is supported by the flex plate stiffener supplied in the kit. The stiffener is required, to support the flex plate when the starter motor is engaged.
