HZJ80 Holden V8

HOLDEN V8 ENGINES

To

LAND CRUISER HZJ80/100

80 Series Land Cruiser Information:

HZJ80 manufactured from May 1990 to 1998 powered by the 6-cylinder 4.2ltr diesel engine. The transmission a 5-speed manual. The 4-speed automatic, with a lockup torque converter was not an option with this engine. The transfer case type HF2A (full time FWD) or HF1A (part time 4WD).

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture kits that allow the fitting of 304, 308 and 350 Cubic Inch Holden V8 engines.

Australian Emission Requirements

To comply with Australian emission laws the new engine must have been manufactured the same year or later than the vehicle. The engine must also have all of the emission components connected, including the catalytic converter. In this instance the engine must also be run on unleaded fuel or LPG. An older engine can be fitted providing it's run only on LPG fuel.

In Australia an engineer's report is required after the conversion has been completed. Contact your local RTA office for a list of engineers.

Holden V8 to the Land Cruiser 5-Speed Manual

Bellhousing

The HZJ80 Manual - GM V8 Kit part no. MFK1060H utilises the Toyota bellhousing, instead of a replacement bellhousing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 61 mm/2.4" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota 1HZ, bolt pattern on the rear.

Flywheel and Clutch

The new flywheel supplied in the kit accepts the original Toyota 11" clutch. The flywheel is offset to the rear to place the clutch in its original position. The flywheel has no ring gear and must be used with the original GM flex plate and ring gear. Spacers and bolts are supplied to fix the flex plate to the back of the flywheel.

A/C Compressor

When fitting a Holden V8 the Holden A/C compressor will need to be relocated to clear the front diff. New brackets will need to be fabricated to relocate the Holden A/C compressor or alternately the Toyota A/C compressor.

Engine Mounting

The engine mounting kit to suit the HZJ80 series Land Cruiser consists of engine block brackets, engine mounting rubbers and bolts. The original Toyota chassis brackets are welded to the chassis and must be cut off with a grinder to make room for the new brackets. The new brackets must also be welded to the chassis, if you're not a good or qualified welder, we suggest a contract welder do the job.

Interface Wiring and Speed Sensor

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture an interface wiring loom for Holden EFI V8 engines to fit any model Land Cruiser, to compliment the loom we also manufacture a special speed sensor interface.

BCM

Commodore VR and VS engine computers (PCM's) require a security signal from the body control module before the engine can be started. The BCM simulator is programmed to supply the correct security signal allowing the engine to be started.

The simulator is programmed to send both VR and VS security codes.

The simulator is also equipped with an output to control a relay for the engine cooling fan. This option will only work with VS models.

ECM/PCM Mem-Cals

Commodore VT engine management computers require a stream of data to be sent to them from the body control module, prior to starting the engine. This is part of the vehicles anti theft system. The stream of data required by the PCM is special. Fortunately the input to the PCM can be switched off by changing the program information in the mem-cal. Marks 4WD Adaptors can supply mem-cals on an exchange or out right basis.

EFI Component Brackets

Marks 4WD Adaptors also manufacture a range of brackets to make the EFI parts easy to install, they are the high pressure fuel pump and damper bracket, relay mounting bracket, high pressure fuel filter bracket, carbon canister bracket, map sensor bracket and mounting bolts, nuts and clamps.

EFI High Pressure Fuel Pump

The HZJ80 will require a high-pressure fuel pump and filter system when fitting the EFI Holden V8 engine. Marks 4WD Adaptors now have a kit that includes a high pressure, fuel pump, and filter along with all of the other EFI component mounting brackets required to do the job.

Holden 308 V8 Bolt Patterns

No kit is available to fit the Holden Trimatic bolt pattern, as this bolt pattern can not be machined into the adaptor. When ordering Holden 308 V8 kits, please make sure the bolt pattern at the rear of the engine is a Turbo (Chevy) pattern.

The 1988 VN and later 304 C.I. and 350 C.I. engines have the Turbo bolt pattern.

The bolt patterns are illustrated below.

Holden V8 to the Land Cruiser 4-speed Automatic

The HZJ80 Manual - GM V8 Kit part no. MFK1060HA utilises the Toyota bellhousing, instead of a replacement bellhousing, a flywheel housing is supplied which measures 61 mm/2.4" long. This housing has the GM bolt pattern on the front and the Toyota 1HZ, bolt pattern on the rear.

The transmission torque converter is coupled to the flywheel via a crankshaft adaptor. The adaptor has a special bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the transmission end with the GM crankshaft bolt pattern and spigot diameter on the engine end.

This allows the new flex plate (supplied in the kit) and the Toyota torque converter to be bolted to the rear as with the old 1HZ engine. On the front of the crankshaft adaptor a flywheel is used instead of a flex plate, as there is no provision to support a flex plate when the starter motor is engaged.
