General

Front Springs

Heavy-duty front springs are recommended with a 25mm bump stop extension to give adequate front drive shaft to adaptor housing clearance.

Engine sump

The engine sump will need to be modified to fit in the Patrol. In standard form the VH4# sump drops at the front, this will hit the diff with minimal suspension movement. It can be cut to rotate the bowl to the rear.

Manual Transmission

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture conversion kits to replace the standard Nissan petrol & diesel engines with GM diesel V8 engines.

We have found that the 5-speed transmission fitted to these vehicles is very durable and will handle the power of high output V8 engines.

NOTE: 3ltr petrol and the 2.8ltr diesel engines are fitted with a smaller gearbox and is not considered strong enough to handle the power of V8 engines. If you are considering a V8 conversion for one of these vehicles, you must change the transmission to one from a TB42, TB45, TB48, TD42 or the 3ltr diesel or alternately you could fit a GM 3, 4 or 6-speed automatic transmission to the original transfer case. Should you use an automatic transmission with your V8 conversion we would recommend you fit a set of extra low range gears to help regain your engine braking.

Clutch

We only recommend using the GM 12" clutch and pressure plate when fitting Chevy V8 diesel engines.

Clutch Hydraulics

The standard Nissan clutch hydraulics don't have enough travel to fully disengage the Chevy 12" clutch. Marks 4WD Adaptors now have kit that includes a new clutch master cylinder and a new slave cylinder that when fitted will give sufficient travel to fully disengage the 12" Chevy clutch.

Engine Kit

The kit consists of a steel adaptor plate which converts the Nissan VH4# bolt pattern to a standard Chevy bolt pattern. The adaptor plate measures 25mm in length and is located to the Nissan VH4# engine using the original 9.5mm dowels, the adaptor is fitted with 2 x 5/8" dowels as per a standard Chevy engine. This adaptor plate is then coupled to one of our MFK605 aluminium adaptor housings which then couples the new engine to the original petrol or diesel Patrol bell housings. The MFK605 adaptor housing measures 72 mm in length and when added to the 25mm steel adaptor plate spaces the new engine away from the irregular shape of the Nissan Patrol firewall.

The Nissan VH4# crankshaft is is fitted with hi tensile studs and an adaptor that supports the new flywheel. The flywheel utilises the original Nissan auto flex plate and ring gear. The flywheel is drilled and doweled to accept the Chevy pressure plate. The new crankshaft adaptor is machined internally to accept the spigot bearing.

No firewall modifications or re positioning of the original transmission is required.

A gearbox input shaft extension is also supplied with the kit, which fits over the original gearbox input shaft. The new spigot bearing supports the input shaft extension at the front and the gearbox input bearing at the rear so no movement is experienced. The input shaft extension converts the Nissan gearbox splines to standard GM 26T dimensions.

A flywheel cover plate, thrust bearing extension carrier, spigot bush as well as all the required bolts are supplied with the kit.

Automatic Transmission

Automatic Transmission Information

The standard Nissan 4-speed automatic transmission fitted to these vehicles is very durable, however performance upgrades will be required for it to satisfactorily handle the power and torque of a V8 diesel engine.

You could also fit the GM 4L80E automatic transmission in place of the original 4-speed auto.

To enhance your vehicles off road performance and safety we recommend fitting a set of low range gears. The Gearmaster Low Range Gears help regain your engine braking during steep downhill descent.

The 700R-4 was available in two different case variations. The standard GM V8 version will bolt directly to the Chevy V8 petrol, Chevy V8 diesel and Turbo pattern Holden 5L V8 304/308 engines. If you intend using a 253 Holden V8 or a Trimatic pattern 308 you would need to adapt the automatic transmission to the engine with an adaptor plate, they are generally available from any speed shop.

The V6 Commodore was also fitted with the 700R-4 transmission. The V6 transmission has a different bolt pattern to the V8 version and therefore, will only bolt to a Commodore V6 engine. The 700R-4 is an excellent choice as an automatic transmission in a 4WD vehicle as it features a low 1st gear, lower than any other GM auto, and an overdrive top gear, ideal for highway cruising.

The 700R-4 utilises a lock up torque converter for improved efficiency. The engine ECM controls the lock up. To perform this operation the ECM requires a speed input from the vehicle speed sensor or VSS.

The Commodore 700R-4 automatic transmission was replaced by the 4L60-E in the 1993 VR model, they then changed the rear housing to a 6 bolt setup during the VT Commodore era. The transmission is electronic and is controlled by the engine management computer.

The 5-speed transmission fitted to these vehicles is very durable and will handle the power of high output V8 engines.

NOTE:The 3.0L petrol and the 2.8L diesel engines are fitted with a smaller gearbox and are not considered strong enough to handle the power of a V8 engine. If you are considering a V8 conversion for either of these vehicles you must change the transmission to one from either a TB42, TB45, TB48, TD42 or 3.0L diesel Alternately you could fit a GM 4 or 6 speed automatic transmission to the original transfer case using a transfer case adaptors.

The 4-speed automatic transmission fitted to these vehicles is very durable however a performance upgrade is required for it to satisfactorily handle the power and torque of a V8 engine.

NOTE: The 5-speed Nissan automatic transmission is not preferred for this engine conversion as the electronics required to make it perform correctly are not readily available. It is recommended that you fit a GM 4L80E automatic transmission in place of the original 5-speed auto when fitting a Chevy diesel engine in place of the 4.8ltr engine.

Should you use an automatic transmission with a V8 conversion you will want to regain your engine braking. You may also want to enhance the vehicle's off road performance and safety. In both instances it is recommended that you fit a set of extra low range gears.

Holden / Chevy GEN3 LS1, LS2 V8 Engines

The kit consists of an adaptor housing which couples the new engine to the original petrol or diesel bellhousing. The new adaptor housing measures 72 mm in length and spaces the new engine away from the irregular shape of the Nissan Patrol firewall.

Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture conversion kits to replace the standard Nissan TB42 petrol and TD42 diesel engines with Nissan VH45 series petrol V8 engines.

If you are considering a V8 conversion for one of these vehicles you must change the transmission to one from a TB4.2, TB45, TB4.8, TD42 or the 3ltr diesel or alternately you could fit a GM 3, 4 or 6-speed automatic transmission to the original transfer case.

Should you use an automatic transmission with your V8 conversion we would recommend you fit a set of extra low range gears to help regain your engine braking.

Engine Mounts

Engine mounting kits are also available to fit the GM V8 engines. These kits consist of engine mounting rubbers, bolts, and new chassis brackets. The old chassis brackets will need to be cut off the chassis and the new ones welded back on.

The engine mounts have been designed to give you sufficient legal sump to differential clearance when using a rear bowel GM sump.

NOTE: The engine mounting kits will only suit the coil sprung front-end vehicles. Early cab chassis GQ and Ford Maverick vehicles were fitted with leaf springs.

Engine Mounting Rubbers

Two types of engine mounting rubbers are available, standard Chevy type and now a heavy duty rebuildable type using urethane bushes.

New Chevy Bolt In Engine Mountings

We now manufacture engine mounting brackets that bolt directly from the engine block to the original Nissan engine mounting rubbers.

Engine mounting kits are available to fit the Nissan V8 engines. The kits consists of engine mounting brackets, mounting rubbers, bolts, and new chassis brackets. The old chassis brackets will need to be cut off the chassis and the new ones welded back on.

Two kits are available, the first kit was designed for a vehicle with a 50mm body lift, this kit lifts the engine high enough to reduce the oil pump modifications to a minimum, this negates the need to remote the oil filter. The exhaust is also easier to fit.

The second kit sits the engine lower and prevents the need to lift the body. Body lifts on air bag vehicles are not legal in Australia. With the engine sitting lower the exhaust is a little harder to make and the oil filter will need to be remote mounted.

NOTE: The engine mounting kits will only suit the coil sprung front-end vehicles. Early cab chassis GQ and Ford Maverick vehicles were fitted with leaf springs.

Fan Kits / Cooling

Chevy Diesel Air Cleaner Adaptor

Chevy diesel engines are usually fitted with an air cleaner that looks similar to the type fitted to Chevy petrol carburettor engines. This type of air cleaner will require modifications to allow it to be used with a snorkel. To over come this problem Marks 4WD Adaptors now manufacture a cast aluminium hat that takes the place of the GM air cleaner, this cast hat can then be easily connected to a Donaldson or similar type air cleaner via its 3 1/2" inlet.

Fan Adaptor

An efficient cooling system requires a good radiator, engine driven fan and fan shroud, the GM and Nissan viscous coupled fans are not as effective as the Toyota type.  Marks 4WD Adaptors now stock Toyota viscous couplings and fan blades, we also manufacture an adaptor that couples the Chevy V8 diesel water pump and pulley to the Toyota viscous coupling and fan.

The Nissan VH4# viscous coupled fan is very effective as the coupling, when heated by the warm air from the radiator, virtually locks the fan directly to the water pump rapidly cooling the engine.

Electric fans can be also be used.

Fuel

The Nissan VH4# engine is EFI and requires a high pressure fuel system. If your vehicle was fitted with any engine other than a EFI 4.2ltr or a 4.8ltr petrol you will need to upgrade your fuel system. Early GQ Patrols 8/87 to 1/94 were fitted with carbie engines the EFI engine started production 1/91. A surge tank will be required in vehicles previously fitted with a carbie engine.

Exhaust

Headers will need to hand built to suit the conversion. Marks 4WD Adaptors stock header plates for this purpose.
